Well, many of you have been waiting for me to comment on this blog. When it means losing the memorable pictures from the first day of my beautiful daughter's life, I am furious! I just need a moment to vent...
I cannot stand technology that does not work. It is frustrating when your brand new laptop freezes up and you have to reboot. It is ridiculous when the dish goes out for no apparent reason and there is not a cloud in the sky. We have gone through 3 different DVR's because the hardrives crashed (that may speak to the sacrilegious amount we use it...oops! ). Even though these are very frustrating, they do not come close to what has just happened. The morning of the second day of our daughter's life we (and by "we" I mean Alicia) were unbelievably exhausted, yet in the midst of our stupor we were excited about downloading the pictures of our daughter's first few hours in this world. I took the SD card out of are spanking new camera and handed it to Alicia who was going to stick into the nifty little SD slot in the side of our relatively new laptop (note the stress on "new" in the previous sentence...new should equate to, "IT WORKS!"). However, for some strange and frustrating reason Alicia could not get the computer to read the SD card. I had her reboot the computer because that usually fixes things just like duck tape and WD 40, right! No such luck. I stuck the SD card in and out of the camera trying to will it to work but, of course, it did not and the more I tried it (over and over again) the more I got frustrated. Then my frustration turned into anger and just before I was about to blow Alicia luckily stuck a straight pin in me and deflated me with four little words, "that's not helping anything." She is pretty good at that. I guess that is Gods funny little way of blessing me because sometimes I need those kinds of refining blessings...I digress...
Well, when I realized that yelling really would not fix it I decided to call my brother-in-law who is my go to electronics guru (I am sure you are wondering why I would need an electronics guru when I am so technologically astute which is evidenced by me yelling at a camera). After he asked me a few questions that revealed his view of my technological expertise, he emailed us a data recovery utility that should have done the trick. It didn't. Once we were home from the hospital we turned it over to him to work his magic. After a day or so we got some concerning news that the guru had a guru of his own that he was taking he SD card to and it could cost $100 - $200. I gave him the go ahead jokingly thinking I would be willing to pay $1000 to recover the pictures of my precious baby girl. Tonight I realized that my joke has turned into a reality. We just heard back from the company (named Data I.C.U. - no really that's the name of it or maybe the a department within the company) that has had the SD card for almost a week and the potential quote has exploded to $2,706.25 !!!! (Including tax). People say that daughters are expensive but she is only a week old! It looks like we will be hanging an SD card on the wall in her beautifully decorated PINK room, awaiting the day when Hannah's parents hit the jackpot. Well, I hope that this was worth it for those of you that have wondered who the "Chris" was in this blog title. My baby girl brought me out of hiding and has exposed the daddy sized heart she has wrapped around her tiny little pinky. Hannah, I am sorry, but one day your daddy will be able to afford to recover the pictures of your first day of life. Unfortunately that day is not today...
PS – Props to Barry (electronics guru) for helping us through this, on probably the most stressful week of our lives. You are still my guru, only a guru can find I company called Data I.C.U.

Don't be too quick to let Data I.C.U. have your money. My friend Retrophisch (link on my blog) is very astute with both cameras and computers. He goes to CBC, too. Maybe he can help. He's bailed us out on both fronts (and my wife is a photographer and uses all those cameras & cards all the time and knows all sorts of tricks of the trade.
I agree with Brent, and I'm looking for second opinions (and quotes) up here, too. Plus, I know they are not from the first moments, but I'll send all of the pictures I took just as soon as I get my camera dock in the mail...it doesn't do much good when you leave it 3000 miles away! Your mom should have some good ones, too.
And if all else fails, we'll set up a pay pal account and accept donations. :)
You were just kidding about wanting a new vehicle, anyway, right?
Well at least there is one good thing about it, you checked it early in the process. I sometimes will let pics lay on my card for months. Thank goodness it was only a week. I know those pics are precious but just think, she really hasnt grown any in size so you could reinact everything...that would be a little wierd.
Yeah, Barry said he saw another place too that might be worth a shot. It's always good to get a second opinion! Sorry about this, I remember when we accidentally destroyed a mini dv tape of Large saying bye to our first house and we video taped going into every room. That was a bummer to me, because now he doesn't remember that house. I know that doesn't even compare to your loss, but hopefully you will get it figured out and with only a minor expense. :)
My husband suggested calling Mike Farney. He seems to remember Mike worked with stuff like this before.
Commenting from iPhone so it is short...
